Historical Context

The SUNY Upstate College of Medicine is one of the oldest medical schools in New York. Its name has changed a few times over the years as follows:
College of Medicine, Syracuse University - 1875-1887
Syracuse University College of Medicine - 1887-1950
State University of New York (SUNY) College of Medicine at Syracuse – 1950 - 1953
SUNY Upstate Medical Center – 1953 – 1986

The College of Medicine continues to grow and expand. SUNY Upstate graduates practice medicine at many prestigious universities and hospitals.

Scope of Collection

The collection contains class photographs which span decades of medical school development. There are pictures representing classes starting in 1885 and ending in 1964.

In addition to class photographs, there are images depicting graduations and commencements. Almost all of the pictures have identifying names for each person. However, the names are not as yet searchable. There are gaps in the collection as a consequence of the country’s and the medical school involvement in both World Wars. For example, there are no class pictures available between 1914-1917 during World War I nor between 1939-1945 during World War II.
