Historical Context

Lee Brown Coye (1907-1981) is best known for his illustrations for horror fiction and pulp magazines like Weird Tales.  He was born in Syracuse and lived in small towns in Central New York, including Tully, Groton, and Hamilton, but spent time in North Pitcher in Chenango County.  

He was a self-taught artist and worked with a wide variety of media.

This collection includes glass plate negatives from the Lee Brown Coye collection, showing people and scenes around Chenango County, particularly North Pitcher, where he spent many years of his youth.
