Historical Context

William Henderson Baird (1831-1864) was an officer in the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He served as a Union Colonel and later as Commander of the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action during the 1864 Battle of Petersburg, Virginia.His brother David Wray Baird (1824-1896) was a noted merchant in Geneva, New York.
